An interview with Cay Schröder

Who is Cay Schröder? A thick lump of molecules, created out of cosmic dust and energy, that is just a bit different than my neighbor's.

What does success mean to you? The same as drugs. To achieve success, you need to deal with a lot of assholes. That´s why I’d rather take drugs. Drugs. A short feeling of ecstasy that needs constant feeding on an increasing scale to get the same effect.

What are your obsessions? Women´s asses. And finding beauty in the process of questioning.

What does avant-garde mean to you? Making ‘extraordinary’ associations in one´s subconscious mind. The problem, of course, is that once your conscious mind creates an explanation for these associations, you aren´t avant-garde any more.

What is the most interesting thing happening in art right now? What I notice is the come back of eclecticism in today´s art, a mixture of influences from the past molded into a more personal approach. The growing exchange and accessibility of digital information is a great tool for this. I suppose we live in a ‘neo-eclectic-fashionable-post-existential’ time, with a little taste of ‘impressionistic-dadaism’.

What do you hope to achieve with your art? The recognition of ‘God’ in the everyday.

What’s your relation to Amsterdam? It’s my home town, and our relation is still good after all these years. Only at times I think it's nice to sleep somewhere else, which is why she lets me go to other cities sometimes. She knows I’ll come back because I love Amsterdam.
